Lewis Jones had a very enjoyable weekend, backing winners on the Ryder Cup and for this column at Newmarket. Can he keep his form up? Let’s see…………..
Three runs on the form card that read 0-0-0 will inspire few into backing the chances of Jolie Blonde at Bath, but this horse is trained by Sir Mark Prescott and is making her handicap debut.
Sir Mark has a frighteningly good record with horses making their handicap bow after three maiden runs and the selection should run a sound race off an opening mark of 53.
MONDAY’S TIP (BATH)
17:50 JOLIE BLONDE 3/1 (2PT WIN with BET365)
Meanwhile and it was another fantastic weekend of action with some top-class flat action from Newmarket. It really whets the whistle for next weekend’s action from Longchamp. The star of the show was Bronze Angel, who won his second Cambridgeshire Handicap after a decisive victory.
The 14-1 chance was ridden by talented apprentice Louis Steward had previously landed the 2012 renewal and was the first horse to double up since Rambo Hall in 1992. It was a 50th victory for Steward, who won last month’s Ebor Handicap at York for Johnny Murtagh on Mutual Regard and means he loses his 5lb claim. He’s a jockey to keep an eye on next season. If he gets the rides, he could be a promising young professional.
Furthermore, this column was celebrating on Saturday as our tip of the day Tiggy Wiggy duly landed the Cheveley Park Stakes in a style that was predicted. The 6/4 market-leader was on the weak side in the betting, but ran like an odds-on chance, making all under Richard Hughes showing her usual mix of speed and battling qualities.
Tiggy Wiggy has been on the go since the very start of the season, but may yet enjoy a final hurrah next Sunday in the Prix de l’Abbaye at Longchamp.
Trainer Richard Hannon never shirks a challenge and said: “We’ll talk about it and see what we think but you know us, we’ll probably do it!
“She was bought for £41,000 and is a very good filly – this has shown you can buy a horse for that money and get a top-class one. She’s the two-year-old of the year to me – but she would be.”
She is the 7/2 favourite for the race and would take a lot of beating considering the weight for age allowance she will receive from her elders.
